Summary
This agenda item provides an update on several current and future public art projects managed by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Current Projects:
- Traffic Box Wraps: Eight additional traffic boxes were wrapped in October. Minor installation issues were resolved, and artists will receive $200 honorariums.
- Fire Stations #5 and #6: A subcommittee has reviewed proposals for art at these stations, which are funded by the 2023 bond program with a budget of $253,000 for each project. A separate agenda item provides more detail.
- MLK Jr. Recreation Center Mural: A $20,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful is funding a mural to be painted on aluminum composite panels. The highest-ranked artist, JB Moore, has been selected, and installation is anticipated in early February. A contract ordinance will be presented to Council.
Future Projects:
- Linda McNatt Animal Shelter Expansion: Public art for this bond-funded expansion is being planned. While Animal Services preferred an indoor piece, the Public Art Committee requested an outdoor component. Staff are revising the scope to include both indoor and outdoor elements. Public art for the Animal Services Center is expected to be complete by Summer 2027.
Fiscal Information: The report outlines the budget timeline for public art projects, with significant allocations for the Animal Center ($317,000), Fire Stations ($506,000), Active Adult Center ($930,000), and S. Branch Library ($969,000).
