Summary
This ordinance establishes an honorary street designation for Cedric Burrell on 16th Street East, extending from Main Street to Hubbard Street in Council District 7. Two honorary roadway markers will be installed. The ordinance waives two requirements of the Municipal Code: the honoree must have been deceased for at least five years (waived as Mr. Burrell passed away in 2024), and the honoree must have resided within five miles of the designated street for at least ten years (waived as Mr. Burrell owned and operated the Island Tropics restaurant for over 20 years and significantly contributed to the community).
Cedric Burrell, originally from Jamaica, passed away on June 5, 2024. He and his wife, Sydney Burrell, owned and operated the Island Tropics restaurant at 2527 North Main Street for over 20 years. Mr. Burrell was also involved in developing and revitalizing the neighborhood surrounding the restaurant, owning several rental properties and businesses along the Main Street corridor.
The application fee of $761.00 was paid, and notifications were sent to 10 affected property owners. Four owners provided written consent, and the remaining five are deemed to have consented due to non-response. The Legislative Services Division will forward the ordinance to the Public Works Department, Traffic Engineering, and Addressing Divisions for implementation.
