Summary

This local law, Int. No. 0262-2024, sponsored by Council Member Joseph, mandates the installation of speed humps on roadways adjacent to any park that is equal to or greater than one acre in size. The Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for this installation. However, the Commissioner of DOT retains the discretion to decline installation if, in their judgment, it would endanger pedestrians or motorists, or if it is inconsistent with DOT's established guidelines for speed hump installation. The law defines a "park" as any park under the jurisdiction of the department of parks and recreation that is at least one acre, and a "speed hump" as a raised area in the roadway pavement designed to slow vehicular traffic. This legislation takes effect 180 days after it becomes law.

Residents living near larger city parks (one acre or more) may see new speed humps installed on adjacent roadways to improve safety, unless the Department of Transportation determines it's unsafe or inconsistent with their guidelines.
