A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to a public information and outreach campaign regarding uterine fibroids

This local law, Int. No. 697, sponsored by Council Members Narcisse and Louis, mandates the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to establish and implement a public information and outreach campaign regarding uterine fibroids. The campaign must begin within one year of the law's effective date and will include information on adverse health effects, sources of exposure to linked chemicals, prevention methods, risk factors (including race/ethnicity), symptoms, screening, diagnosis, treatment, relevant health care services, and rights to workplace accommodations. The department will create materials in appropriate languages, distribute them to healthcare facilities, medical providers, and community organizations, prioritizing identified priority neighborhoods. The commissioner will consult with the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation and other relevant organizations. A report on the campaign's reach will be submitted one year after implementation and every five years thereafter. The law takes effect immediately.

Residents, particularly those at increased risk, will receive vital information about uterine fibroids, including symptoms, prevention, and treatment options. This campaign aims to improve early detection and management of a condition that disproportionately affects certain communities.
