A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to creating a good food purchasing program

This local law establishes a Good Food Purchasing Program for New York City agencies, aiming to improve the quality and sustainability of food procured. The program is based on five value categories: environmental sustainability, local economies, health, valued workforce, and animal welfare. A Good Food Purchasing Advisory Board, composed of agency commissioners, mayoral appointees, and council-appointed members with relevant expertise, will oversee its implementation. The board will conduct baseline assessments of agency food procurement, develop three-year plans with benchmarks, and evaluate contract bids based on the program's standards. Annual progress reports will be published, and the program standards will be reevaluated every three years. The law takes effect 120 days after enactment.

This initiative aims to improve the quality and healthfulness of food served in city institutions, such as schools and hospitals, by prioritizing sustainable sourcing, fair labor practices, and healthier ingredients. It also supports local economies and animal welfare in the food supply chain.
