Summary
This local law requires the New York City Department of Education (DOE) to annually distribute materials to all middle and high school students about the risks of social media and online hate. The materials, to be distributed by September 15th each year, must be age-appropriate and cover topics such as social media addiction, negative impacts on mental and physical health, online dangers, bullying, harassment, misinformation, disinformation, and methods to prevent or mitigate harm. The DOE must also make these materials available on its website in English and designated citywide languages. The law takes effect immediately.
Students will receive educational materials on the dangers of social media and online hate, including information on addiction, mental health impacts, and misinformation, empowering them to navigate online spaces more safely.
