A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring the review of certain parking signs and a utilization study of parking reserved for commercial vehicles
Summary
This local law, Int. No. 534, sponsored by Council Members Farías and Banks, mandates annual reviews by the Commissioner of Transportation to update or remove parking signs that are no longer relevant due to the closure or relocation of associated facilities (e.g., schools, hospitals, government buildings). It also requires an annual consultation with the Commissioner of Sanitation to assess and update alternate side of the street parking signs based on changes in street cleaning frequency or timing. Furthermore, every five years, the Commissioner of Transportation must conduct a utilization study of commercial vehicle parking areas and truck loading zones to assess if restrictions should be modified or removed due to low utilization. A report detailing the study's findings, actions taken, and any proposed actions must be submitted to the Mayor and the Speaker of the Council and posted online within 90 days of completion. The law takes effect immediately.
This legislation aims to reduce unfair parking tickets by ensuring parking signs are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect current street conditions and facility changes. It will also lead to more efficient use of commercial parking spaces by studying their utilization.
