This resolution commemoratively renames the intersection of 39th Avenue and Telegraph Avenue in Oakland to “Bishop Charley Hames, Jr. Way.” The renaming honors Bishop Charley Hames, Jr. for his distinguished service as the 66th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, his transformative leadership as Senior Pastor of Beebe Memorial Cathedral CME Church in Oakland for over twenty years (growing the congregation from 81 to over 3,400 members), and his lifelong commitment to faith, community services, and social justice. The resolution also authorizes the installation of a commemorative plaque or sign at the intersection, following the policy established by Oakland City Council Resolution No. 77967 C.M.S. Bishop Hames was elected to his episcopal role in June 2022, leading congregations across multiple states, and has been active in various civic organizations and advocacy efforts, including participation in a White House meeting with President Barack Obama in 2012.
