The existing bridge, built in 1913, is structurally deficient due to deterioration and alkali-silica reaction in its piers, posing a risk of closure within 10 years. The proposed replacement will involve constructing two new bridge structures on a new alignment. Key improvements include enhanced safety for all users, dedicated accommodations for cyclists and pedestrians, and a "road diet" to reconfigure traffic flow. The project aims to improve connectivity between Downtown Richmond and Southside communities, support the development of Mayo Island Park, and bolster economic growth. The City of Richmond's Department of Public Works is the lead applicant, partnering with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The project is seeking significant funding, including a $95.8 million grant from the Bridge Investment Program (BIP).

Residents can expect improved safety and accessibility on the Mayo Bridge with dedicated bike lanes and wider sidewalks.
