Positive Youth Development
Summary
This document reviews the progress and impact of the Positive Youth Development (PYD) initiative and its associated fund, managed by NextUp. PYD is defined as an intentional, pro-social approach that engages youth in positive experiences with positive people in positive places, utilizing their strengths to promote positive outcomes. The initiative encompasses prevention, out-of-school time (OST) programming, mental and physical health support, diversion, and intervention strategies. The PYD Fund, launched with ARPA funding, supports over 40 organizations annually, serving over 1,000 youth, with approximately 70% living in Qualified Census Tracts. Data shows positive trends, including a reduction in chronic absenteeism (25.3% in 2022-23 to 20.5% in 2024-25) and an increase in the graduation rate to 80.1% (an 18-year high). Youth also show a reduction in violent activity, with 38% fewer youth involved in violent incidents between 2017 and 2024. NextUp acts as an intermediary, managing provider vetting, contracting, data tracking, monitoring, and providing professional development. Challenges include funding limitations and provider capacity strains.
This initiative provides positive experiences and support for youth through various programs, contributing to improved school attendance, graduation rates, and a reduction in youth involvement in violence. Residents can expect to see more structured and supportive programs for young people in their communities.
